The Conference is organized by Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy (HPMU), The Partnership for Health Advancement in Vietnam (HAIVN) and the World Health Organization Vietnam Representative Office, with support from the United States Agency for International Development (USAID) through its Improving Access, Curriculum and Teaching in Medical Education and Emerging Diseases (IMPACT-MED) Alliance, in partnership with the Vietnamese Ministry of Health.

The 3rd annual National Scientific Conference on Medical Education in Vietnam seeks to provide a forum for sharing innovations and advances in medical/health professional education in Vietnam and the region, with a focus on clinical education in the undergraduate and post-graduate arenas.  The conference aims to stimulate discussions among medical education leaders, inspire further innovations, and foster a community of medical educators invested in advancing medical education research and quality improvement. 

The Conference theme is “Achieving Competency in Medical Education” for both undergraduate and post-graduate medical /health professional education. It will be organized around the following 4 sub-themes, each having its down dedicated sub-section in the conference.

The conference is currently soliciting abstracts around the following four thematic areas:

1. Using Assessment to Build Towards Competency

This session aims to share experiences in assessment methods utilized in medical and health education to ensure competency.  The session will include topics such as:

  • Assessment strategies, tools and approaches used during the pre-clerkship and clerkship years
  • Innovations in Assessment and Evaluation
  • Creating new/novel approaches to assessment and evaluation, including the incorporation of EPAs

2. Transitioning from Knowledge Acquisition to Competency Based Medical and Health Education in the Pre-Clerkship Years

This session aims discuss strategies and pedagogical approaches to incorporate in competency based medical/health education in the pre-clerkship years.  This can include case-based teaching, utilization of skills/stimulation, etc…  The session will include topics such as:

  • Pedagogical approaches for basic and medical sciences to drive towards medical/health professional competency
  • Using stimulation and skill centers to maximize achieve competency
  • Curricular reform in the basic and medical sciences to increase relevancy in health professional education

3. Developing Competencies for Healthcare Professional Students to Participate in Community-based, Primary Health Care

This session aims to discuss approaches and methods which integrate healthcare professional students in community based settings.  The session will include topics such as:

  • Approaches to integrate community-based clinical experiences and context in undergraduate medical/health professional education
  • Primary care experiences, doctor-patient relationship, and building professionalism and humanism in medicine
  • Incorporating in longitudinal experiences for students to engage with communities and patients

4. Clinical Teaching to Achieve Competencies

This session aims to discuss and share clinical teaching strategies to increase exposure and allow students to optimize practice in clinical settings.  The session will include topics such as:

  • Designing clinical frameworks and strategies that focus on milestones and skill acquisition
  • Tracking student development in clinical knowledge and skills to ensure competency
  • Pedagogical approaches to teach clinical knowledge to achieve competency


Conference Proceedings will be published in the Hai Phong University of Medicine and Pharmacy’s Journal of Medicine and Pharmacy.  An entire issue, “Innovations in Medical Education” will be devoted to the proceedings, and selected abstracts and manuscripts generated from the Conference.

All abstracts will be competitively peer reviewed. The Abstracts should be no more than 300 words, written in English, and be structured as follows:

1. Title

2. Authors with affiliations

3. Contact information (name, telephone# and email address) of presenting author

4. Abstract Body, including the following:

  • Background
  • Methods
  • Results
  • Potential Impact or Lessons Learned

5. References (up to 10)

6. Biosketch for presenting authors (up to two): (1500-character maximum per biosketch)

Style Guide

  • Abstracts must be in 12-font Times New Roman, single spaced.
  • Abstracts should not include any figures or tables.
  • All required information should be in a single Microsoft Word file and uploaded at the following site:

Researchers should designate whether they prefer oral or poster presentation.

Decisions regarding oral presentations will be made by the Scientific Review Committee.
